Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: She will be able to transform into some type of bird or birds. I am still deciding about whether this will be one species or multiple species. Hopefully it’s okay to be more specific about this later.
Role Reasoning: I waffled between Legend and Familiar for Eloise and I landed on Familiar. While overall she is a “good” person and would probably consider herself as such, she also likes to buck convention. She has no interest in the typical life of an upper class young lady and wants to be able to explore and pursue her own interests. She sees herself as a black sheep of the family, especially compared to her sister Daphne. Thus, I think she would occupy a more neutral space well. .
★ Personality ★

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

  • What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it?

  • Finding out that her life-long best friend Penelope Featherington was Lady Whistledown, the anonymous author of society’s hottest gossip pamphlet, changed a lot of Eloise’s beliefs. She had a huge respect and adoration for Whistledown, as she saw her as a woman who was making her own way in the world without caring what other people thought of her. All during Season 1, Eloise was trying to determine Whistledown’s identity. She never dreamed that it could be Penelope, who is very sweet and mild-mannered. When Whistledown reveals a scandalous secret about Eloise, she is devastated. Eloise finally puts the pieces together, realizes that Whistledown is Penelope and confronts her. A huge fight ensues and their friendship effectively ends. I think that if Eloise had found out about Penelope being Whistledown in a different manner, her reaction to that news would have been much different. She would have been in awe of her friend being the person that Eloise respected the most. Instead, she saw the whole thing as a betrayal, from revealing a reputation-ruining secret to Penelope not telling her that she was Whistledown to begin with. It changed how she felt about two very important people in her life: Penelope and Lady Whistledown.

  • If you could give your character a Taylor Swift playlist, which songs would be on it and what would they represent about your character?

  • The Man - Eloise might as well have written this song. It encompasses everything she feels about how society views her and her gender. She tells her brother Benedict that he should pursue his dreams because she will never be able to. Being a woman means that she is resigned to one fate (marrying and having a family), a fate that she does not want for herself.
Bad Blood - At the end of Season 2 when Eloise figures out that Penelope is Lady Whistledown and that she publicly exposed Eloise’s improper interactions with a lower class man, their lifelong friendship crumbles. There is now a lot of bad blood between the two of them that does not seem solvable. Eloise feels betrayed in the worst way, as described in the song.
my tears ricochet - The much more subtle side of ‘Bad Blood’ and what I project Eloise and Penelope may be going through next season. Both of them are hurt by what happened between them and they may see coming back together as an impossibility.

  • What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise.

  • Eloise struggles most with fitting in and finding her place in society. She’s awkward, and that’s particularly difficult for a girl in Regency Era high society. Not having the same aspirations as most other girls, she feels like she can’t relate to them. She doesn’t like socializing, or going to balls, or dressing up, or meeting eligible men. That leaves her with few friends besides Penelope and her family members. She could probably improve by putting herself out there a little bit more. I think she may come off as off-putting because she automatically assumes that people won’t like her, so she doesn’t even bother to try. Just trying to engage people about what interests her might make a difference, and she might be surprised to find that she is not the only one with her interests.

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

  • Eloise feels most relaxed when she’s at home with her family, preferably in the sitting room reading a book. She is an introvert and tends to be a homebody, though it depends on where she is going. When she attends a discussion about women’s rights, she is seen as confident and enjoys discussing issues with like-minded individuals. Any place where she can be intellectually stimulated is a place that she will feel most confident and most like herself.
